Curious about the latest cutting-edge stuff going into new homes? The 2013 New American Home currently being built in Las Vegas, Nevada will provide lots of answers. The home will be finished in time for the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) annual convention in January, 2013. The New American Home is kind of a laboratory showcasing new building materials and design trends.

Each year the NAHB sponsors a new home, brought to life by a residential design-build firm located in the host city. The 2012 New American Home is in Orlando, Florida and we wrote about it. For the Las Vegas home, I’ll track the progress of this project in the coming months, posting updates here on our website through each phase until its completion.

The design trend for the 2013 New American Home features a blending of indoor and outdoor living spaces: Lots of glass, desert landscaping, natural materials such as concrete walls. While its modern design is not for everyone, I think it is very appealing. The quality will certainly be built into this home.

Are you planning on doing a home building project, addition or renovation? Consider getting an interior designer such as Patrick Van Nice Interiors involved early. If you do that, you’ll save lots of money and wind up with a home that reflects your personal style and the way you live. We work with builders and remodelers all the time on behalf of homeowners.

Epic 4-Part German Opera Alert!

by Patrick Van Nice on May 9, 2012 · 0 comments

in Art,Charitable Event,Opera

Have you ever taken up a new activity in your life that you tried out years ago, stop doing, only to try it again and find out you really missed it all these years? And now you’re thoroughly enjoy it again?

For me going to see an opera performance is that activity and I’m having a great time falling back in love with going to the opera. What caused this sudden rediscovery? It all started last winter when I was looking for a local not-for-profit organization to be the beneficiary for a fine art sale I wanted to put on. After much research and interviewing, we came up with the idea of asking both Salisbury House & Gardens and Des Moines Metro Opera to be our beneficiary groups. The event – Art At The Castle – will be on Thursday, November 8 at Salisbury House in Des Moines. Save that date!

As part of my preparation I decided I should take in some opera – something my wife, Judy and I tried out several times when we first moved to Des Moines in the mid 1990’s but haven’t been back to in all the years since. So this past winter and now spring I’ve managed to attend The Metropolitan Opera’s “Live In HD” performances of Handel’s Rodelinda, Verdi’s La Traviata, and Wagner’s Dream, a new documentary about the four year making of Met Opera’s production of Richard Wagner’s four-part The Ring.

Starting tonight at 6:30 pm with Das Rheingold, all four operas in the Ring cycle will be shown over the next 11 nights. That’s 16 hours and 20 minute’s total. Sung in German with English subtitles! I think it will be spectacular. Want to join me? The next opera, Die Walküre is Monday May 14, 2012, at 6:30 pm, followed by Siegfried Wednesday May 16, 2012, 6:30 pm, and finally Götterdämmerung on Saturday May 19 at 12 noon. Century 20 Theaters at Jordan Creek mall in West Des Moines will be showing these operas in HD. Imagine being in your movie theater seat, watching in HD surround sound a performance live on stage from the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center in New York City. Pretty awesome. Hope to see you there!

As preparation for Art At The Castle, a fine art sale and charitable fundraiser that I’ll be putting on November 8 at Salisbury House & Gardens to benefit Salisbury House and Des Moines Metro Opera, I recently took a quick trip to the Chicago suburb La Grange. While there, I checked out a fine art trunk show at Mary Vincent Fine Art Gallery in  the Chicago suburb of La Grange, Illinois. The sale was Saturday & Sunday, April 28 and 29. Walter Edelman, a private art dealer from New York City was conducting the sale. Walter will also be the art dealer at our event this fall. To give you an idea of what a fine art sale looks like, I took some photos and video of the action. The art was wonderful and the nice people at Mary Vincent Fine Art Gallery were gracious hosts.

Beautiful still life painting

The paintings shown on this table are from a Argentinian artist. There’s heavy embossing on the painting. On the table are two paintings  that could be displayed side by side as a dyptic.

This piece of art is not to everyone’s taste, but I could design a room around this painting and the room could be several different styles of decor and turn out great.

Abstract Expressionist style painting

The price on that abstract expressionist black and white painting is….

Another beautiful abstract painting

My Favorite Designer Working Right Now: Martyn Lawrence Bullard

Not only do his interiors have great style, but Bullard comes across as a genuinely nice person – and I know he’s a very good business man from what I’ve learned on how he runs his design business.

He is currently one of the designers on Bravo’s Million Dollar Decorators http://www.bravotv.com/million-dollar-decorators. You can catch a little bit of Bullard’s personality in this video and get some inside tips on how to design for Cher and Sir Elton John.

Today, Learn How to Hang Pictures on a Wall

Hanging art work or family pictures is one of those life skills that we should all know – but we don’t. Today, I found this helpful video from Lowe’s Creative Ideas and like to share it with you.

Watch and learn about different types of hooks, how to hang a row or group of pictures, and even how to hang a picture on tough walls: old plaster, concrete, brick, even concrete.

You can do this!

In the next few days I’ll share with you another video I found on how you can easily hang a whole bunch of pictures in a grouping on a wall.

Nine Tips for Selecting the Perfect Oriental Rug for Your Room

Heirlooms Fine Oriental Rugs in Clive, Iowa

Recently I spoke with Ryan Staiert of Heirlooms Fine Oriental Rugs located in Clive, IA. I can tell you, Ryan’s the Oriental rug expert in Iowa. He started his rug gallery seven years ago and he offers only genuine, handmade oriental rugs imported directly from the Middle East and Asia. As you can tell from the photos I took that day at his gallery, these are truly works of art.

Here are nine tips Ryan shared with me on how to select that perfect Oriental rug for your room:

1. A quality rug will be 100% wool and hand knotted – not made by a machine. Ryan’s rugs come directly from India, Pakistan, Iran, Tibet and Nepal. The dyes used are either vegetable or chromium.

4 Do’s & 1 Don’t: How To “Wow!” Your Fireplace Mantel

Now with fall here, chances are you’re spending more time around the fireplace. Surrounding the fireplace is the mantel: technically speaking, all the decorative wood or stone around and on top of the fireplace opening. One of the puzzles in decorating your room is what to place on the mantel shelf and the wall above.

Let me give you a piece of advice. My only “Don’t” tip: Don’t put your television screen above the fireplace. Three reasons why:

Eco-Friendly Party Time!

"Liam" Sofa from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, an Eco-Friendly Furniture Company

Time to have a party! Last year I completed training to become a Certified, Eco-Friendly Home Furnishings Specialist (try putting that on a business card) with the Sustainable Home Furnishings Council. There are about four hundred of us GREEN Leaders in the United States who have completed this work. Including many interior designers who are the A-Listers of design. The ones who have cable TV shows, are in the decorating magazines, publish heavy coffee table books, have their names on furniture you can get at national retailers. You know, those people! Seriously, we – me and them – have something in common: we care about our clients and want to be of service to make it easier for you to own products that are eco-friendly and sustainable. We are interior designers, furniture retailers and furniture manufactures.

Today marks the 222nd day since the grand opening of my business Patrick Van Nice Interiors last November. Note: I have quite a few years interior design and decorating experience, but always working for someone else. Now I’m the one in charge. Gulp! So if you could indulge me I’d like to get all introspective on you for just a minute or two.

Patrick Van Nice Interiors is a work in progress. Perhaps like me, you or someone close to you have your own business or hope some day to follow your dream and start a business. For you, here are some truisms I’ve learned that I either did not know or did not fully appreciate just 222 days ago:

1. Get help with your business as soon as possible. ASAP! Figure out all the things you can get someone else to do better or more cost-effectively than you can. It can be hard letting go. After all letting go means you will have to pay that someone else to do the delegated work for you.

Top 5 Closet Organizing Tips

Alchemilla Building in Sherman Hill Neighborhood of Des Moines, IA

At our house we are beginning to do a major cleanup over the next seven weeks. If you’re like me and don’t like to clean house (sorry, Mom!) it helps to have a deadline or an event coming up to get you all motivated. In our case the “2011 Sherman Hill Doors To The Past” tour of historic homes is coming up the last two weekends in September. Our house is one of about ten on this year’s tour. Actually we live in a section of the building shown above called Alchemilla. It is six townhomes made to look like one enormous Victorian mansion. Alchemilla was built in 2007 on a weedy vacant city lot and designed by architect Jefferey Morgan. If you want to drive by, its located at 16th Street and Pleasant Street in Des Moines, one block north of Hoyt Sherman Place and one block west of Methodist and Blank Childrens Hospitals. Better yet, come pay us a visit on the upcoming home tour.

Did you make it to the Des Moines Home & Garden show this past weekend at Hy-Vee Hall & Vets Auditorium in Des Moines? I got over there Friday afternoon and did the speed tour: walking very quickly down the aisles to avoid contact with every person standing in their booth. Not easy! I stuck to my mission to connect with high quality craftspeople who work in the areas of custom furniture or home remodeling. And I hit pay dirt!

Some of the local businesses that I want to know more about because they impressed me so much:

Factor II Fabrication

  • Factor II Fabrication – custom steel, wrought iron and wood furniture. Boonie is the owner. He’s an artisan working in metals and wood. I love his business motto: “I don’t want to rule the world, just furnish it.” Head over to his website for photos of metal and furniture projects he’s completed. In addition to furniture, you’ll recognize his work on display in public spaces like on the sidewalk in Des Moines’ East Village, metro restaurants, and businesses.
  • Steve Lamberti of Natural Elements Woodworking – Steve builds custom-made furniture, cabinets, bookcases and rockers in his Pleasant Hill woodworking shop. The pieces on display at his Home & Garden Show booth were truly beautiful. Nothing heavy or clunky. Smooth to touch. Beautiful woods. I could go on and on. Natural Elements Woodworking is the way to go when your room needs a certain size bookcase or cabinet and you want the room to look great.

KC Handyman

  • KC Handyman Service – a division of Kaufman Construction. Like every home owner in the world you have a never-gets-done list of small projects and repairs to do in your home.  Save yourself grief and money by having a handyman service come over. With the handyman working on your list you’ll gain a great sense of accomplishment while saving time. You won’t need to make three trips to the hardware store to get the right parts or tools. What time-savers! KC Handyman Service also has monthly specials.

Starting today, February 8 and through Saturday the 11th, The 2012 New American Home is open to the public as part of the International Builders Show. The convention is in Orlando and the newly built house – it was finished just last week – is on a city lot nearby. The home while contemporary in design looks very comfortable to be in.

What gets me excited are the eco-friendly building construction methods and materials such as an interior stone wall to absorb sunlight by day and release radiant heat at night, solar panels on the roof combined with a Lennox solar panel heating system, LED lighting throughout the inside and outside, natural materials such as real limestone plank flooring, and low V.O.C. paint by Sherwin Williams.

Above is another video showing the home in its final stages of construction. The National Home Builders Association has several other short videos to show you the project from its design inception through the finish product. They are worth watching.

Another home I’d love to get on a plane and go see! If you are thinking about a home building project or a renovation, you too can use these ideas to make your home comfortable, great looking and save money on your energy bill.

Want To See What’s New & Beautiful?

Twice a year in April and October interior designers look forward to seeing new introductions of furniture as well as fabrics, rugs, lighting and accessories. I like to look for new fashion trends and items to use in my client projects when getting to see the new stuff.

Being a member of Interior Design Group – a showroom and work space for designers – one of the perks is sitting down with company representatives from dozens of furniture companies when they come to IDG in West Des Moines. The reps pass around photos of the big pieces (sofas, chairs, wood furniture) and present large fabric swatches (about 2′ x 2′ square) of the newest fabrics on our work table. In each meeting there could be hundreds of items to look at.

Ready for five minutes to brighten up your dull winter day? Let’s leave Des Moines and head down to West Palm Beach, Florida and tour an interior designers’ Show House. What’s a Show House? Its a fixer-upper or new construction that is taken over by interior as well as landscape designers with each designer dressing a room or space up. They are literally showing off their talents for the public. Tickets are sold and thousands tour the home. Money is raised for local charity. To be honest there hasn’t been a Designer’s Show  House in the Des Moines metro in quite a few years. Which is too bad because there are a lot of talented designers around Central Iowa.

This video produced by Traditional Home magazine features the 36th American Red Cross’ Designer’s Show House in West Palm Beach. If you get there between now and February 18 you can tour it in person. Highlights: This home reflects what I’m seeing right now in the furniture and fabric world for color: Lots of blue! It seems everyone has moved on from brown – the major color trend of the past few years. In this video you’ll see blue used in all its shades: blue with white, sky blue, indigo, aqua, ocean blue, navy with white, aqua blue with orange. Other colors and finishes on display: lemon yellow paired with grey, white painted woodwork, chrome and brushed nickel metals, red poppy, tables made entirely of acrylic, orange, and personally my favorite color, warm yellow. Enjoy the video!

Traditional Home magazine serves as the national media sponsor of other Show Houses around the U.S. in 2012:

Ritz-Carlton Chicago, April 20-May 13. Proceeds benefiting The Art Institute of Chicago

The Designer Showhouse of New Jersey, April 29-June 10. Saddle River, New Jersey

Hampton Designer Showhouse, July 22-September 4 benefiting Southampton Hospital

Holiday House, November-December. Proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen’s greater New York City affiliate.

I think I’ll try to get to the Chicago Show House this spring. Sounds like a lot of fun!
