December Best Of Van Nice Design

Andrew & Gemma, 5th Grade Artists

In your home, what makes a room beautiful is the blend of custom made pieces, such as the window coverings and sofas & chairs, along with objects you have purchased or made yourself.

It seems that, at least at our house, the rooms are also continuously evolving. New pieces come home. Old ones are given away. Some will always be with us.

Dwell Home Furnishings – Cool & Unique Stuff For Your Home

One of the pleasures of working with clients on their interior design projects is when I go out into the marketplace and finding sources for things for their homes. With that in mind, a couple Saturdays ago I took a day trip to check out design studios and furniture stores in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and Coralville, Iowa.

I want to tell you about my discoveries at one store in particular. This was my first visit to Dwell Home Furnishings and Interior Design in Coralville, located on Highway 6 just east of Coral Ridge shopping center. How to describe Dwell? A furniture store and rug gallery where you can find beautiful and unique pieces for your home that no one else you know will ever have. And I found the prices are very reasonable.

This Bucket List Contains Wine and Beer

Fireside Winery, Marengo, Iowa

This has nothing to do with interior design. But I would like to tell you about a project I will be working on that combines my passion for wine, beer, travel and Iowa entrepreneurship. XMQBVBUPFGWG

I have set a fun goal for myself: I’m adding to my bucket list the goal of visiting every microbrewery, winery and vineyard in Iowa – in my lifetime. It won’t be easy. There are now over one hundred wineries and breweries spread out over every part of Iowa and more destinations are popping up each year. Plus, I want to find really good tasting wine. So, I’m looking for quality, not just quantity. I want to meet the growers and brewers and hear their stories. They are the 21st century Iowa entrepreneurs. They have passion and are willing to risk their money and careers on work that has no immediate monetary payoff for them. I appreciate those qualities in people!

Tassel Ridge Winery, Leighton, Iowa

Let me start by asking you a few questions. Do you like wine? Do you like beer? Do you live in Iowa or plan on visiting Iowa? Ok, too many questions. I can answer yes to all three. I have this great notion that Iowa wines and beers will become exceptional over the next generation, much like what happened for wines in the California wine growing region over the last 100 years. The success story of California wines didn’t happen overnight. It took several generations to achieve the overall quality and reputation California wines enjoy today. I believe that same story is now being told here in Iowa all over again. The grape varieties are different in Iowa in order to thrive in our hot summers and arctic winters. But the craftsmanship is the same.

To get around to all of the locations, I will use the great information found at Iowa Economic Development’s website to plot my wine and beer journeys.  To clarify, I want to go to the actual wineries and breweries. Not just buy the bottles at Hy-Vee or my local liquor store and drink the stuff at home. There’s no deadline for me to see them all. It’s all about the quest. There’s no rush to be finished! As I visit, I’ll be sure to write about what I taste so we can spread the good news.

A good map for wine is the Catch Wine – Iowa list. You can get up to speed with where all the wine is at the Iowa Wine Growers Association website. Thirsty for a micro brew beer? The Iowa Brewers Guild can point you in the right direction.
